Issue of pork in Bible

I was asked recently, as a former Christian, why do people eat pork though it seems to be forbidden in the Bible. Together with my mom, we made some research in this matter and here it goes.

It is indeed written in Old Testimony that pork is prohibited. You can read it at the beginning of Chapter 11 in Leviticus.

1

The LORD said to Moses and Aaron,

2
“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: Of all land animals these are the ones
you may eat:
3
any animal that has hoofs you may eat, provided it is cloven-footed and chews
the cud.
4
But you shall not eat any of the following that only chew the cud or only have
hoofs: the camel, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is
therefore unclean for you;
5
2 the rock badger, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is
therefore unclean for you;
6
the hare, which indeed chews the cud, but does not have hoofs and is therefore
unclean for you; and the pig,
7
which does indeed have hoofs and is cloven-footed, but does not chew the cud
and is therefore unclean for you.
8
Their flesh you shall not eat, and their dead bodies you shall not touch; they
are unclean for you.
(New American Bible)

The New Testamony however doesn’t say anything about pork, on a contrary, there are many verses that would give full liberty of choice.

And he [Jesus] called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand: Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
(Matthew 15:10-11)

(…)there is nothing unclean of itself but to him who considers it to be unclean then to him it is unclean.
Romans 14:14

(…)every creature of God is good and nothing is to be refused if it is received with the prayer of thanksgiving.
1 Timothy 4:4

So now, how do people explain these two contradicting laws? Well, they moderate and destinguish between religious rules, that supposed to me made only for need of certain time. In Old Testimony God calls pigs unclean as they could be found in filthy paces, ate garbages and even couldn’t be used as a sacrifice! But in New Testimony, as it is believed, due to Jesus’s death and resurrection, world had been purified, sins were washed away and New Covenant has been made.

4
Peter began and explained everything to them precisely as it had happened:
5
I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw
something like a large sheet being let down from heaven by its four corners,
and it came down to where I was.
6
I looked into it and saw four-footed animals
of the earth, wild beasts, reptiles, and birds of the air.
7
Then I heard a
voice telling me, ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat.’
8
“I replied, ‘Surely not, Lord! Nothing impure or unclean has ever entered my
mouth.’
9
The voice spoke from heaven a second time, ‘Do not call anything impure that
God has made clean.”
10
This happened three times, and then it was all pulled up
to heaven again.
(Acts 11:4-10)

It has been also written:

Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. “Don’t you see that
whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the
body? But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart,
and these make a man ‘unclean.’ For out of the heart come evil
thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony,
slander. These are what make a man ‘unclean’; but eating with unwashed
hands does not make him ‘unclean.’

(Matthew 15:16-20)

For that in my humble opinion, Christians took liberty in deciding that pork is allowed and didn’t accept kosher doctrine. In the same time I know few Christians (my family for example) that refused to eat pork and believe it’s wrong :)

  1. Eating pork
    Matthew 5:17-20 (New International Version)
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Just curious is this not clear enough regarding abolishing the laws.:)
18I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Both the Bible and the Qur’an prohibit the eating of pork. Muslims are aware of this prohibition and observe it strictly.
However, most readers of the Bible say they do not know where they can find this in the Bible.

In the book of Leviticus, chapter 11, v. 7, it is recorded that God declares the pig to be unclean for believers. Then, in
verse 8, God says: “You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you”. This command is
repeated in Deuteronomy 14:7-8. Then, in Isaiah 65:2-4, and 66:17, God issues a stern warning against those who
    eat pork.

Some people are aware of this prohibition from God, but they say that they can eat pork because St. Paul said that all
food is clean in his letter to the Romans 14:20. St. Paul said this because he believed (as he wrote in his letter to the
Ephesians 2:14-15) that Jesus had abolished the Law with all its commandments and regulations. He seems, however,
to have misunderstood what he heard about Jesus. In the Gospel According to Matthew 5:17-20, Jesus is reported to
have said quite the contrary, as follows: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law . . . .” Jesus then went on
in that passage (in verse 19) to denounce anyone who would break the smallest commandment and teach others
likewise. He also praised his true followers who will practice and teach even the smallest commandment. One of the
commandments, as we have seen, is to stay away from pork.

This is why the true followers of Jesus, holding on to his teachings, did not let unclean food such as pork enter their
mouths, so that Peter, the chief disciple, can say, “I have never eaten anything impure or unclean” (Acts of the
    Apostles, ch. 10, v. 14)

Five chapters later in the Acts of the Apostles, 15:29, we find that the original disciples still differentiate between clean
and unclean foods, and this time Paul is in agreement with them. Six chapters later, in ch. 21, v. 25, their decision to
impose food regulations on believers is mentioned without regret, and this time Paul is challenged to prove that he is in
agreement with them; and he demonstrated his full agreement with them.

What remains, then, is that Jesus, on whom be peace, upheld the prohibition against pork. His disciples also upheld it,
and so must all his followers. Those who fail to uphold it need to be informed and reminded of this rule from God.
This is one reason why God sent His final messenger, on whom be peace. God says:

“O people of the Scripture ! Now has Our Messenger come unto you, expounding unto you much of that which you
used to hide in the Scripture, and forgiving much. Now has come unto you light from Allah and a plain Scripture.”
(The Meaning of the Glorious Qur’an 5:15).

Why is the eating of pork forbidden in Islam?

    1. Pork-prohibited in Qur’an

The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places. Its prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115.

Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked a name other than that of Allah. [Al-Qur’an 5:3] The above verses of the Holy Qur’an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.
    2. Pork prohibited in the Bible

The Christian is likely to be convinced by his religious scriptures. The Bible prohibits the consumption of pork, in the book of Leviticus and the swine, as he divideth the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you. Leviticus chapter 11 verse 7 and 8:
Pork is also prohibited in the book of Deuteronomy

And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass. Deuteronomy chapter 14 verse 8:

A similar prohibition is repeated in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.
    3. Consumption of pork causes several diseases

The other non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason, logic and science. Eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types of diseases. A person can have various Helminthes, like roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc. One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which in a layman’s terminology is called tapeworm. It harbours in the intestine and is very long. Its ova i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack and if it enters the eye it can cause blindness. If it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.

Another dangerous helminthes is Taenia Tichurasis. A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from

Taenia tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ovas present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.
    4. Pork has fat building material

Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack. It is not surprising that over 50% of Americans suffer from hypertension.
    5. Pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth

The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, faeces and dirt. It is the best scavenger that I know that God has produced. In the villages they don’t have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the open air. Very often excreta is cleared by pigs.

Some may argue that in advanced countries like Australia, pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbour’s excreta.
    6. Pig is the most shameless animal

The pig is the most shameless animal on the face of the earth. It is the only animal that invites its friends to have sex with its mate. It feels no jealousy. And among people who consume pork, the practice of wife swapping and other forms of promiscuous behaviour is common.

    and allah alone gives succes
    wasalam :)
