Christianity, Islam and Judaism- Basic Comparison.
Just for the records I’ve attached table with basic differences and similarities between the three great monotheistic faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. So we all have something in common after all
!

Islam |
|
Origin of the Name |
From the Hebrew:Yehudim, ‘Judah’. |
From the Greek: christos, ‘Anointed’ – referring to Jesus Christ. |
Derived from an Arabic word for ’submission’. Also related to the Arabic word salaam, ‘peace’. |
|
Leader |
Abraham (First Patriarch, born c. 1800 B.C.) |
Jesus Christ |
Mohammed |
|
Divisions |
Several divisions, including Hasidic (Orthodox), Conservative and Reform Judaism. Ethnic groupings include Ashkenazi (The majority) and Sephardi Jews. |
Three main groups: Orthodox, Protestant and Roman Catholic. |
Two main groups: Sunni and Shia (The division occured due to a dispute as to the legitimate successor of the prophet Mohammed). There is also a mystical/ascetic movement in Islam known as Sufi. |
|
Followers |
14 Million; not every Jewish is Jew! |
2,100 Million |
1,300 Million, 20% arabs, 80% other nationalities! Not every arab is muslim! |
|
Nature of God |
One God (known in English as ‘Yahweh’ or ‘Jehovah’) – “…Hear Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is one.” (Deuteronomy 6:4). |
One God, who exists in three distinct persons (The Trinity): Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). |
One God (Arabic: Allah), who is not a trinity. The Islamic view of God is called strict Monotheism (Quran 112:1). |
|
Holy Book(s) |
The Hebrew Tanakh, similar to the Christian Old Testament, comprised of the Torah (Hebrew: ‘Law’), Nevi’im (‘Prophets’) and Ketuvim (‘Writings’). |
The Bible (from the Greek:Biblos, ‘books’), given by God to man. The Bible writers were inspired by God in their writings. Thus Christians refer to the Bible as the Word of God (2 Timothy 3:16). |
The Quran or Koran (Arabic: ‘recitation’), revealed to the prophet Mohammed over a period of about 20 years. The Quran is the final revelation given by Allah to mankind. |
|
Jesus Christ |
An ordinary Jew, not the Messiah nor a divine person. |
The second person of the Trinity: “…true God from true God” (Nicene Creed), and born of the Virgin Mary. |
A prophet, sent by Allah and born of the Virgin Mary, but not divine (Quran 5:17). |
|
Jesus Christ, The Mission of |
As Judaism rejects the idea of Jesus as Messiah, his mission is of no relevance. |
To reconcile Man to God, through his death as a sacrifice for the sins of all mankind. |
To proclaim the Injil, or gospel. This gospel has been corrupted over time by human additions and alterations. |
|
Jesus Christ, The Death of |
Jesus was crucified for his claim to be divine. |
“For our sake he was crucified…he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again…he ascended into heaven…”(Nicene Creed) |
Jesus was not crucified (Quran 4:157), but was raised to Heaven by Allah (4:158). |
|
Holy Spirit |
Not a distinct person, but a divine power which for example, was given to the Prophets. |
The third person of the Trinity, truly divine: “….with the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.” (Nicene Creed) |
Identical with the Angel Gabriel, who appeared to the Prophet Mohammed giving him the Quranic text. |
|
Other Traditions |
The Talmud, an oral tradition explaining and interpreting the Tanakh. It includes the Mishnah – a code of Jewish law. |
The writings of the early church fathers and ecumenical councils, including the Creeds. |
The Hadith, a collection of traditions/sayings of the Prophet Mohammed. The Hadith functions as a supplement to the Quran, giving guidance to Muslims for daily living. |
|
Examples of Rituals |
Rituals include the Circumcision of newly born Jewish males, Barmitzvah – a ceremony marking the ‘coming of age’ of Jewish Boys and observation of the Sabbath (Shabat). As in the other faiths, prayer is important. The Jewish prayer book is called the siddur. |
The Sacraments, including Baptism and Holy Communion(Eucharist). In Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism, five more are added, viz: Confirmation (Chrismation), Marriage, Penance, Holy Orders and Anointing of the sick. |
Five important rituals (known as the pillars of Islam): |
|
Sin |
Humans are born with a sinful nature (Genesis 8:21). Atonement is made through seeking forgiveness from God in prayer and repentance. In addition, the day of atonement (Yom Kippur) is set aside specially for this purpose. |
We inherit a sinful nature through our common ancestor Adam, who rebelled against God. Jesus Christ atoned for our sins through his death on the Cross (Romans 5:12-17). |
There is no concept of original sin, nor vicarious atonement. All Humans are born sinless, but human weakness leads to sin. |
|
Salvation |
Through good works, sacrifices and the grace of God. There is no parallel to the Christian view of substitutionary atonement. |
By grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9). |
Achieved through good works, thus personal righteousness must outweigh personal sin (Quran 23:101-103). |
|
Hell |
Judaism recognises the concept of Gehinnom or Gehenna – those who die in sin may suffer temporary punishment, but certain sins merit eternal punishment. |
A place of everlasting punishment for the unrighteous (Matthew 25:46). There is no crossover between Heaven and Hell. |
A place of torment and fire (Quran 25:65, 104:6-7). In Islam, Hell is known as Jahannam. Jahannam has several levels and a person may not necessarily spend eternity there. |

You seem to be such a lovely soul. How do you justify this? Do you believe that God approves?.
Hi Sharer,
Thank you for stopping by to my blog and also directing my attention over this subject. Well I don’t think neither God, nor mentally stable person would approve or justified such act. You see, it is not problem with God, Satan or religion, but people. Human nature is very specific, with inclinations towards good and bad. At times we get right nudge towards one of these, though deeds as such are final results of choices one makes for which, logically carries responsibility. God doesn’t normally interfere in our lives, unless one would really ask and nag Him to
. Almighty is like a kid with an ant farm…He decides only when one comes and departures this world- that’s all. He’s already given us heart, mind, rules to stick with, so only thing is to control population on ‘farm’ and pulling consequences later on. In the same time, if one muslim or representative from any other religion, does something wrong, doesn’t mean that whole religion and all their believers approve it or would do same thing.
This story however stresses one very common fact on worldwide scale, almost same in nature since centuries- that women have harder pit…however we can do something absolutely amazing and remarkable men can’t- give life, so may be it is worth it after all
What a bundle of information this post has … !!!
Thanks for writing it.
Relighon, under the guise of Christianity, had a horrible and bloody past. Jesus says that we are to love God above all else and to love and pray for our enemies and those who dispitefully abuse us. What a wonderful world it would be if we actually loved eachother and looked out for our neighbor’s good first. but we aren’t there yet.
Thank you for your thoughts. You are an amazing woman.
That is wonderful Amina,
impressing summery, well done! As I see beauty can go with brains beautifully, what a killing combination!!! And these eyes…Ok, gonna shut up now, but I really admire your work. You look beyond things, and get right to the core.
May Allah award you and guide you always. You can do so much, show Truth as with your kindness and open mind attitude, people do really listen to the tings you say. That is rare gift Amina, use it.
Thank you Desert Rose,
You are far too kind in your words though I am not doing anything extraordinary. It is easy to talk about facts, Truth is obvious
salams!
Assalam U Aalaikum
Can i have the references from where you have developed this comparison…you have linked Jesus to Islam and Judaism… but what about the mention of the later prophets in all these books?
That would also give an overview of how judaism and christanity have culminated into the final religion!
Just a thought!
Simple & understandable for anyone including me. Keep it coming!
Waaleykoom Salam Shaykh,
I completed this table based on own research and best knowledge. That shouldn’t however suggest that my comparison is flawless though I very much tried it to be
If you find something, do let me know!
Thank you Ridwan for kind words. Insha Allah you will hear more from me
regards
Amina
thanks. this was great to read and give me some basic info on other religions other than christianity!
The christians and jews and all other religions are very different than Islam. In Islam the True muslims believe that God is the CREATOR. He is Eternal, and everything else is created. God has no Beginning, and NO Ending because to have a beginning means that the one now in existence was in need of the creator to bring that creation to the state of existence and by the jews and christians falsely claiming God is a man they are saying that his flesh, blood and bones that are like us were created and thats impossible for the All perfect creator. He Exists Without a Place because the places are All created by Allah, and when one falsely says that God is a human there saying God is in a place and in need of a place and God doesn’t need ANYTHING because NEED is an attribute of the creations and a sign of weakness. He is not a body or form because by saying God is a human There saying what’s possible for you is possible for me, For example If you lose an arm it makes sense to the sound intellect that I can lose an arm or eye and experience death And this is impossible to God. So By saying God is like the Humans there saying indirectly God is susceptible to the same things and weaknesses we are susceptible to. He does not occupy a place or a direction. We are in a place right now. You are containing a space at this very moment, when you get up to move your going to occupy another space in other words where ever you are you are CONTAINED IN A PLACE and it is a sign of weakness and weakness IS NOT an attribute of Allah. He is the Creator of the Muslim Prophet Jesus may peace be upon him and the Creator of everything. Many people might say that their (false) bible or Book said such and such. The fact is I have a Holy book of The honorable Quran and the blasphemers have there book they falsely believe in however when i Have a debate with a christian or jew, hindu or any other belief that believes God is a CREATION LIKE YOU AND ME, I say to them i wont say any verse from my book and they close there book. Lets talk logic. That was only the tip of the Ice burg that a muslim should know. I strongly urge you to seek to learn more about Islam and see why its the fastest growing religion other than all the lies out in the media. I order you sincerely to believe what I said and Enter Islam by saying with your mouth out loud enough to hear your self: I now know believe and declare that no one is God except Allah And Muhammad Is His messenger. May Allah make you successful. visit aicp.org and alsunna.org and for a brief video about is islam follow this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoNaT19Aaxk
All will know the truth when they see the Muslim Angel of death give them the news either Heaven or Hellfire Fear Allah
